Garbage Monitoring is a huge problem in maximum cities all over the world. Improper management of waste is a major factor for environmental pollution. This results in several health issues. Our idea caters to the needs of the society on a daily basis and also integrates technology and hygiene. The first sphere of our idea takes into consideration, the hygiene of the people. Avoiding physical contact with the dustbin is of utmost importance as it ensures cleanliness and social hygiene. A system with automated lids will be deployed in all the dustbins to tackle this problem. Next, to ensure periodic removal of garbage from waste bins, an automated message delivery system has been built. With the help of sensors installed in the bins, continuous monitoring of waste levels takes place. Upon reaching a threshold, a message containing the location of the bin will be sent to the corresponding municipal worker. There are also sensors placed inside the dustbin that continuously monitor the presence of hazardous gases in the dustbin. If detected, the same will be intimated to the worker. We have also developed an app that keeps the public updated about the status of the dustbins in their locality. This will help them in identifying empty dustbins near them and helps them in disposing their waste.
There are two ultrasonic sensors placed in the dustbin, one facing up and the other facing down. If the sensor facing up detects a human being/hand, then the lid of the dustbin opens. A servomotor is used to replicate the opening of dustbin lid in the prototype. The lid remains open for 15 seconds and closes automatically after that. If the dustbin is full, then the lid will remain closed even if the person places his hand in front of the ultrasonic sensor. The ultrasonic sensor facing down (inside the dustbin), keeps checking if it is full or not. If the dustbin is full, an automated message will be sent to the corresponding municipal head in charge. The status of all bins present in the locality will be updated regularly in the app that has been created for the public (The sensor value is periodically updated in the firebase console, which is then accessed by the app created in MIT app inventor and is shown with a proper designer interface). As an added measure, MQ-4 is also included to check the presence of methane and other odors. If it’s hazardous to people, this will also be intimated to the municipal head.
